Medicine Wheel Pollinator Garden
Vision
Our vision was to create a welcoming and sustainable space upon entry to our school that provides an opportunity to learn from the land with the knowledge that we are gaining. We wanted to use the medicine wheel to inspire our pollinator garden.
As well, we wanted to improve the percentage of organics being composted in our classroom by purchasing new compost buckets for each of the classrooms for next year.
Action
We were able to receive donations from our local Home Hardware as well as our local Co-op to cover all costs associated with the building materials and the soil for the medicine wheel pollinator garden. Myself and another teacher, as well as my sons built the frame of the garden and with the help of the students we planted the garden.
We were then able to use the grant money to purchase pollinating plants. Myself and another teacher also brought in native plants from our home gardens and forested areas near our homes.
Reflection & Celebration
I found it difficult to meet with the students regularly as in a school our size a lot of the grade 7/8 students are involved in the same clubs and sports.
Receiving donations of materials made it much easier to reach our goals and fill our pollinator garden for this growing season.
As well, receiving donations allowed us to purchase much-needed more durable compost buckets for our classrooms for next year.
It looks amazing. We have received many lovely compliments. It is a welcoming space that greets families each day. It is also a welcoming space for outdoor learning to take place for the classes.
