Microgreens
Vision
For our action project, we worked on sustainably growing our own microgreens. By being able to grow our own food, we can reduce the amount of transportation needed to get food from the farm to the grocery store to our homes. This reduction of food miles will reduce the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere through the different transportation methods.
Action
We started our action project by holding a bake sale to educate the school community about the benefits of growing your own food. We sold donuts and lemonade that were purchased from local businesses in Halifax. We asked that the biodegradable lemonade cups be returned to us instead of thrown away. Then a few weeks later, we went to grade two and three classes to teach the students how to grow tomatoes and marigolds in the cups from the lemonade sale. These two plants were chosen as they can easily be grown in cups and marigolds are a good companion plant to tomatoes. By teaching the younger students how to grow vegetables, we hope to inspire and encourage them to talk to their families about sustainably growing vegetables! Next, we worked on growing our own microgreens. We bought mini greenhouses with grow lights and set up microgreen arugula, basil, and kale. The microgreens are off to a great start and once they are ready to harvest, we will use them in a recipe. We hope to expand on this in the next academic year!
