Native Species Pollinator Garden
Vision
Our vision was to make a pollinator garden for our school and communicty because we want to help the environment. Our Eco club W.O.W influencers want to Educate everyone about the importance of a pollinator garden for the environment and for the community. We will be tracking the pollinators that visit the garden doing lots of education within the school and the community and plan on extending our garden next year!
Action
For the garden planning (e.g., grant, garden location, types of plants) 20 students in our ECO Ways of the Warrior influencers were involved. The preparation and planting of the garden 6 students and 5 educators were involved. As soon as recess started 50 plus students became involved in spreading soil, watering, asking questions etc. Since the garden has been created all 308 students have visited the garden and been educated on the importance of native species pollinator plants and gardens. We have educated the school on why we decided to put in a pollinator garden at school and how they can help put in a pollinator garden or pollinator plant at home. An email went out to the school community about the garden to educate and invite families to visit the garden. We chose the location of the garden as it is attached to community greenspace so neighbours who walk their dogs or visit the park can also admire the garden and learn about the importance of pollinator plants. We planted a large vareity of native species pollinator plants. We have been tracking how many bees and butterflies have been visiting the garden too. The kindergarten team enjoyed our pollinator garden so much we were able to make a pollinator garden in one of their conatiners in the outside area! We have put together a watering schedule for the summer to ensure the plants survive and get fully established.
Reflection & Celebration
The response we have had from the school and the community has been unbelieveable. They are so engaged in the learning and more and more students want to get involved in caring for the garden and educating the school and community. Many students reported to their parents that these weeks have been the best weeks of school. We have noticed a decrease in anxiety and dysregualtion, more engagement in all subject areas and excitment and curiouslity in learning. We are very grateful for this opportunity!
