Nisbet Eco-Warriors Earth Week and Beyond

Vision

At James Nisbet Community School, many educators firmly believe in Education for Climate Action. We have been participating in school-wide initiatives for several years, including composting, recycling, and gardening and many other projects in different classrooms.
This year we have been working towards creating different climate-action groups in the school. In February, we started a K-5 student group called the “Eco-Warriors”. The Eco-Warriors meet every Thursday at morning recess break.

Action

The Eco-Warriors brainstormed different ways that we could make a difference in our community and beyond. Some of our Eco-Warriors attended the LSF Climate-Action Forum on March 19, 2025. From that day forward, we started to brainstorm a climate-action week that would happen starting on Earth Day (April 22).
We took their ideas of how we could make a difference and planned them into a week, as followed:
Monday, April 22 – Earth Day Celebration (Assembly): The Eco-Warriors led the school in highlighting some of the amazing work being done in different classrooms in our school, such as, Watershed and Future Cities projects. The kindergarten classes performed a song, and a grade 5 class performed a song they wrote.
Tuesday, April 23 – Community Clean Up: In previous years, classes have used plastic bags and plastic gloves for garbage pick up. This year, we tried to mitigate the added waste by using Home Depot pails (already own by the school) and cooking tongs (purchased at Dollarama). Our school collected a total of 157 lbs of trash out of our school yard and community.
Wednesday, April 24 – Commuting Challenge: Teachers filled out a survey based on how their class got to school that day. We had two classes that had 100% participation, meaning they had no students who got driven to school that day. The winning classroom received a pizza party.
Thursday, April 25 – Zero Waste Day: We invited classes to participate in a waste-free day. We sent a note to families. Some classes weighed how much garbage they had while other classes sent it home with children.
Friday, April 26 – Upcycling Art Challenge: Students created beautiful art and cool games using upcycled items. Moving forward, we will be continuing this project through a Makerspace club.

Reflection & Celebration

The impact of Earth Week resonated within our community and planted seeds for greater things to come for James Nisbet Community School. We are currently planning an outdoor learning space and meeting area in our school yard. We are asking students to share their ideas for what they would like to see in an outdoor classroom. Our Eco-Warriors and Climate-Action group are working hand in hand.
