No Idling Campaign
The Notre Dame Eco Team’s message of “Global Warming is a Global Warning” was used to launch our “No Idling Campaign”. The team focused on the problems caused to our environment by car emissions. We can be active and reduce car emissions in many ways (take public transit, car pool, take your bike to school etc.), however, drivers should also remember to turn off the car\’s engine and not to idle when parked. In this way, we can ALL be part of the solution.
Step 1: Take a survey of cars that were found idling (for over one minute) outside school property.
Step 2: Communicate “Global Warming is a Global Warning” message and the idea and reasons behind the “No Idling” Campaign. This was done through PA announcements, posted posters, and a synrevoice message sent home to student body.
Step 3: Eco Team members discussed car emissions implications and issued “tickets” to individuals who had their vehicles idling for longer than one minute.
Step 4: Take a survey of cars that were found idling (for over one minute) outside school property.
RESULTS: On the first survey, 21 cas were observed idling. Eight “tickets” were issued to offending drivers. Three weeks after the campaign began, we tabulated only 2 cars idling!
