Notre Dame Native Species Garden Expansion Project
Vision
Our green knights club came up with the idea to expand our native species garden. Over the past 3 years it has grown and flourished to be a very bright spot on our school grounds and the students decided it would be a good idea to make the bed larger to allow for future planting and growth. Initially, the students planned out the costs of materials and getting them to our school but we simply did not have the funds. once we saw the opportunity with LSF grant funding we realized it could work. In order to make our small garden of 4 square metres into one of 9 square metres we needed strong curb stones for our perimeter, more soil, more lime stone and some heavy lifting and work from our students. Everyone was ready to help.
Action
Once we were approved to purchase then materials we planned a few club outings to design the direction for our garden’s growth. On the day that the materials arrived, 9 students and 2 teachers got to work taking the old bed apart, placing the new stones and materials into making thew new garden bed larger and we now have an even bigger bed to plant and learn about green spaces and native species in our community.
Reflection & Celebration
As the club leader, I am very proud of thew hard work and dedication of our small eco club to get their hands dirty with a project that may look small but actually has a larger impact. We planned to create more permeable green space to reduce rain water run off in our built environment as well as an opportunity to learn more about school grounds greening. We hope to plant trees next year on our school property, which has been spearheaded by our spatial technologies classes who are currently mapping out existing trees and their condition. 🙂
