O.V. Jewitt Garden Education
Vision
Our vision was to expand our capacity to grow vegetables plants on school grounds during the school year. We feel that it is important to engage students in this learning to help promote environmental stewardship, provide important life skills, and to understand how food is grown. We feel there is a strong link to this learning and providing students the skills and understanding to help combat climate change going forward.
Action
This year we expanded our ability to grow plants and vegetables at our school. Previously installed grow lights and shelving allowed us to grow salad and vegetable plants indoors during the winter and spring months. We used our grant money from LSF to install a rain barrel and garden boxes in an under-utilized space on our school grounds. The installation of the garden boxes will allow us to take our vegetable plants grown indoors and transplant them on school grounds. Students will get to see a variety of fruits and vegetables grown including tomatoes, corn, and cucumbers as they engage with plants during the majority of the school year.
