Vision

Ocean Defenders –

We live in the very beautiful city of Fredericton and our only problem is the amount of plastic that we see during spring. Our vision is to inform ad educate people on the dangers of plastic pollution.

Action

We performed a lot of actions, a few were to create posters to put on the bulletin board in our school to inform people on the dangers of plastic pollution in our oceans. We also created a survey so we could find out what people know about plastic pollution, the results of the survey helped us to dictate their knowledge on plastic pollution. We made a powerpoint and kahoot to present to the younger students at our school and they were very eager and responsive and wanted to know more about what we were doing. We interviewed Nicole Waaler an Associate at the Huntsman Museum and found out about their #DebrisFreeFundyIntiative and that their team worked very hard to remove at least 6kg of ropes and other unwanted trash in the ocean. That motivated us to do a plastic cleanup around the shorelines of our beautiful Wolastoq river, we mostly found cigarettes butts and plastic packaging.

Reflection & Celebration

This project opened our eyes to the dangers of what is going on around us and our environment and was a fun and educative experience for us. We enjoyed filming, interviewing, editing and working in a group. We understand the problem’s severity and hope this documentary positively impacts society.
Celebration: We will have a Film Festival at our school between May 28th- May 30th in which classes from grades six through eight can sign up and bring a class to watch our Water Docs videos that we created. We will have a few students who were involved in Water Docs there to facilitate the showing of the videos. We will have a feedback form for them to fill out afterwards and there will be time for our student leaders to answer any questions from the classes.
