Outdoor Classroom
Vision
Our school community has embarked on a major initiative to revitalize our outdoor learning and gathering spaces. This multi-phase project includes the creation of a fire pit, an outdoor classroom, a Sea Can storage shed, and the planting of Indigenous trees, shrubs, and other native plant species to promote local ecological learning.
Action
Over the past two years, with the support of a few small grants and philanthropic contributions, we have accomplished an impressive range of goals. We built a large fire circle that can accommodate multiple classes, and students constructed seating through their shop classes. We also acquired a Sea Can to serve as our garden shed.
To improve accessibility and address muddy pathways, we purchased and installed limestone gravel in both ¼” and ¾” down sizes. These materials have significantly enhanced the safety and reliability of access to our outdoor areas for both students and staff.
Additionally, we developed an in-house composting system that has drastically reduced our organic waste output.
While we’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far, we recognize there is still important work ahead. We continue to face drainage challenges that will require the installation of a French drain system. We also aim to plant suitable Indigenous plant species to support drainage solutions and provide natural shade and shelter, further enhancing the space for our school and broader community.
Reflection & Celebration
As mentioned earlier, we are very proud of what we’ve accomplished in a short period of time. We’re also pleased to report that this project engages the entire school community, from Kindergarten through Grade 8, with strong support and buy-in from administration, staff, and students alike.
