Papermaking with Invasive Plant Species

Vision

Identify invasive plant species growing in the area. Learn about invasive plant species and the negative effects on the environment and animal habitat. Harvest plants for papermaking. Use for art projects such as book marks and book covers.

Action

Watch educational videos about invasive plant species and sustainable hand papermaking. Harvest Yukon invasive plant species, white sweet-clover, in and around school yard. Process plants by cutting, cooking and blending to create a pulp for papermaking. Document process with botanical studies and cartoons illustrating process. Make paper and art!

Reflection & Celebration

This was a great project that involved many layers of learning from environmental stewardship, to science and arts. Students were physically engaged with materials in the outdoors and created something of meaning and beauty.
