Pasadena Academy Environmental Group’s Pollinator Garden Contribution to the Pasadena Community Garden

Vision

The Pasadena Academy Environmental Group decided to plant a pollinator garden at the local community garden. We decided that giving back to the community and promoting the grow your own food initiative was a great idea. Many of the group members have an interest in growing food and really feel that this was a worthwhile group project. Throughout the year, we met to discuss environmental issues that focused on sustainability. There are many things we can do to live sustainably as a society, for our project, we focused on growing our own food and doing so in an environmentally friendly way. The pollinator garden that we planned for the community garden will help with the pollination of the garden vegetables and plants. Attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies will increase the success of the garden.

Pollinators play a vital role in our world. They are responsible for pollinating over 80% of the world’s flowering plants, including many of the crops that we rely on for food. Without pollinators, we would not have many of the fruits and vegetables that we enjoy every day. Pollinator gardens are gardens that are designed to attract and support pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. These gardens usually contain a variety of nectar-rich flowers and plants that provide food for pollinators. In addition to providing food for pollinators, pollinator gardens also provide habitat for them. Many pollinators, such as bees, are facing habitat loss due to urbanization and agricultural practices. By planting pollinator gardens, we can help provide a habitat for these important creatures and help to protect them. Another result of our pollinator garden is that it will also provide food and habitat for pollinators. We can help to support these important creatures and the ecosystems they are a part of while also supporting our community garden.

Action

The community garden is a result of a volunteer group that has seen an increase in interest in people wanting to grow their own food. We plan on renting a raised garden bed to grow some of our own vegetables this summer. We hope that our pollinator garden will be a great addition to the community garden. We purchase a variety of perennial and annual plants that are pollinator-friendly to plant throughout the community garden.
