Planting Trees
Vision
Our “Woodland Garden” area of our school year has many mature ash trees. Unfortunately, due to the emerald ash borer, all these ash trees are dead or dying. We wanted to plant some other trees so that our students will continue to have shade and also to maintain the biodiversity of our school yard.
Action
We contacted Green Legacy about the possibility of getting trees from them. Fortunately for us, they were able to give us 13 trees. These trees were a mixture of deciduous and evergreen and all are native to Ontario. The trees are very small at the moment and it will be many years before they give any shade. As we had an Action Project Grant from Learning for a Sustainable Future, we were also able to buy a bigger, more mature maple tree from a local tree nursery. A volunteer was able to get it planted.
