Planting-beds (Plates-bandes de plantes)
Vision
In line with UNESCO’s strategic planning (ESD objectives- Education for Sustainable Development) and our Eco-schools commitment to encourage students to develop eco-responsible habits, we have chosen to set up a platform creation projectbands and garden within our community. We would like our project to cover a larger area and benefit as many members of our wider community as possible.
Action
As part of our commitment Eco-schools/UNESCO (sustainable development) we decided to plant vegetables. We already had flower beds (made by parents) for several years (but neglected during the pandemic period. With the students, we prepared them (e.g. turning the Earth, removing debris, etc.). The plants were purchased from local florists to prioritize local businesses. These are sprouts that we have transplanted and we make sure to water our plants every other day. The students take care of them and since we live in the city, this will allow them to learn that they can have the chance to enjoy tasting and consuming vegetables that they themselves have grown and understand the relationship they have with the Earth (what it provides, etc.). At the community level, we don’t necessarily have access to community gardens so it allows us to have our little piece of Earth that can be shared with our larger community. Following the participation of the UNESCO conference, we watched projects developed by participating students and it made students think that they could do a similar project using our already existing flower beds.
Reflection & Celebration
We hastened to harvest our vegetables and enjoy our organic vegetables. As part of our healthy food snack program, our grown products will allow us to share the joy and pride of eating our own food and introduce our community (students, parents, staff, etc.) to the pleasures of gardening.
