Pollinator Garden
Vision
Students in room 49 visited the Assiniboine zoo this year and learned about conservation of a variety of animals. We wondered what we could do to help our environment. The idea was proposed to create a pollinator garden.
Action
Students wrote a letter to our principal to ask permission and for some money to help support our project. We were visited by an apiarist and a butterfly expert to learn more about how pollinators are important and the impact they have on the environment. They then got to work putting together 4 garden beds and are going to be filling them with soil next week. We will be planting a variety of plants in 3 of the garden beds from the tall grass prairie ecosystem that are known to help pollinators. Next fall we will be plant sage and sweet grass in the final garden bed and work with an elder to learn about the significance of these sacred medicines.
