Pollinator Garden and Awareness

Vision

Our group initiated a project to support the environment by establishing a pollinator garden at our school. We planted a variety of flowers and plants that attract vital pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This garden plays a crucial role in combating climate change, as pollinators are essential for plant reproduction and the maintenance of biodiversity. When pollinators facilitate the reproduction of plants, these plants can absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby helping to reduce greenhouse gases.
Our students were inspired to create this garden after learning about the declining bee population and its implications for our food supply. Approximately one-third of the world’s food crops rely on pollinators, underscoring the project’s importance for our local community. Students also gained insights into native and non-native species, as well as the significance of root systems and water drainage, particularly in light of minor flooding issues in our outdoor play area.

Action

To educate our school community, we designed informative signs detailing each plant’s identity and its significance to our ecosystem. Additionally, we created wooden signs inscribed with messages urging respect for our garden and encouraging the preservation of nature. These signs were crafted from recycled wood sourced from an old bed frame.
Our students, weeded, planted, put down new soil and seeds. They then took care of the garden by watering it and continuing to weed. They made announcements to share the importance of the garden and teach students to respect it.

Reflection & Celebration

The garden not only provides a habitat for pollinators but also functions as an outdoor classroom, offering opportunities for other students to learn about environmental science and sustainability. Through this initiative, we demonstrate that even small actions can significantly impact environmental protection and the fight against climate change.
