Pollinator Garden at Sackville High School
Vision
The Sackville High School Green team wanted to plant a pollinator garden because we wanted to support local ecosystems and improve pollinator conservation. We also wanted to promote educational opportunities and improve aesthetics at our school.
Action
The Sackville High School Green team planted a pollinator garden because we wanted to support local ecosystems and improve pollinator conservation. We also wanted to promote educational opportunities. Students can observe pollinators in action, learn about plant life cycles and understand the importance of conservation. We also wanted to improve aesthetics at our school with a former garden that had been overgrown with weeds. We also held a pollinator blitz day where we educated the student body about the importance of pollinators. We had support from Rebecca Dunn from an organization called Seed (Sustainability and Environmental Education) and from Elisabeth Veenema who put on a very interesting presentation regarding Vermicompost.
Reflection & Celebration
We were pleased that we were able to plant blueberry bushes and chives in the hopes that we may obtain food from our garden but also promote pollination from various species. Students got very involved and worked together to plant this pollinator garden in the hopes it will sustain biodiversity and pollination for years to come.
