Pollinators in the Apiary

Vision

Our vision was to create a pollinator’s dream space in our apiary. We had an area full of native plants but they are not great pollinators and don’t help with soil erosion. We wanted to create a retaining wall with brick and create a beautiful space for our bees to enjoy all growing season.

Action

We cleaned up the apiary, met with a local greenhouse operator to plan our pollinators and tour their facilities, and then we got to work! Hard physical work! We cleared out the overgrown space of weeds and planted our perennial pollinator garden! It took many hands, many days, and a lot of love for our school, community and our bees.

Reflection & Celebration

On reflection of this effort, has opened up the opportunity for our students to take pride in their school campus, appreciate what we have – our apiary, greenhouse, and sugar maple forest – and foster a community of care for our space. We have already started our next projects and can’t wait to get started next year!
