Prairie Restoration

Vision

Our goal is to gradually restore a section of public green corridor to a pre-colonial prairie space using native prairie plants. It will become a space for the school and community to learn about native plants, terraforming and its impacts and the history of the land we live on.

Action

Over a long-term period, students will be working to restore a section of the green corridor (Awasisak Meskanow Greenway). In year one, they restored a 100 square foot section by planting native plant species such as sage, yarrow, narrowleaf sunflower, stiff goldenrod and false sunflower.
Over the coming years students will expand the planting to cover more and more area of their section, allowing the native plants to thrive and spread.

Reflection & Celebration

Throughout the school year the class has been visiting the site and learning about the history of the land. They have learned about things such as pre-colonial life, the role of bison on the prairies, terraforming, winter survival and native plant species.
As spring arrived, we collaborated with a local greenhouse and the city of Winnipeg to prep the site and select appropriate plants for the space.
Planting will begin in mid-June, after which a schedule will be created to care for the site (removing weeds, watering).
There has been a lot of learning this year about the land and its history. This project will be an opportunity for the school community as well as the community at large to witness the transformation of this space and share that learning with us.
