Recycling Bins for Science Hall
Vision
Our school has a fairly new building named Science Hall, which has some offices, the teacher’s lounge, and lab rooms. Other buildings on campus have areas for recycling paper, cans, and for regular garbage disposal. However, Science Hall had only garbage means, meaning much of the paper assignments ended up in the garbage. Although students could in theory walk to another building to dispose of their waste, it wasn’t very practical. Also, because so many classes are held in Science Hall, a lot of paper wasn’t being disposed of properly.
Action
We used the LSF grant to purchase recycling bins to install in Science Hall with the goal of reducing the amount of paper thrown away. For about of year, we made do with carboard boxes used as recycling bins, but they were not durable or maintainable. With high quality bins, we can now ensure that the recycling initiative continues for many years to come. The bins are located in an area that is easily accessible to all students: right in front of the bathrooms on the first and second floors.
Reflection & Celebration
This project encourages sustainability through recycling, and goes hand in hand with our GOOS(e) paper initiative (Good on one side paper). With this infrastructure now in place, students can properly dispose of their paper, contributing to a circular economy.
