Reduce Single-Use Plastics, One Bottle at a Time!
Vision
Our school only had one water bottle refill station for 600 students. To encourage both staff and students to bring in reusable water bottles, we wanted to install a new water bottle refill station on the 2nd floor of the school. We noticed that many older students (who have their classrooms and lockers upstairs) were bringing in single-use plastic water bottles, so our hope was to make refilling bottles convenient so that we could change their behaviours and help our Earth.
Action
Our Grade 7/8 leadership team made the suggestion that we have another water bottle refill station upstairs. Many were surprised at the cost of purchasing and installing one, so students were excited when we applied for the LSF grant so we could help fund the project. In March, we installed a water bottle refill station on the second floor of the school. This provided many classes with an easy location to fill up their reusable water bottle so they can stay hydrated and help reduce single-use plastics.
Reflection & Celebration
Announcements were made to share this great news with our entire school! The Intermediate students in our school have been researching sustainability for their school assignments, so this linked in well with their learning.
