Revitalizing Recycling
Vision
Our vision is to reduce our carbon footprint by sending less to the landfills.
Action
We noticed our school hasn’t been doing a great job of recycling so we spent a week surveying all the trashes in the school. The UNESCO students counted all the items being thrown away and discovered most of it was food trash, plastic trash and paper towels. We then went onto Terracycle and found a box to help us recycle our plastic. The students also noticed that we can recycle batteries and writing utensils so boxes were set up to collect and recycle those items. In order to reduce food waste going to the dump, we connected with a pig farmer and now school food scraps are sent to feed the pigs. The UNESCO group went to each classroom to deliver presentations with posters they made about what can be recycled and where it needs to be put to be recycled.
Reflection & Celebration
The students are looking at fundraising options to continue the program into next year. They will be presenting to our school board to campaign for Terracycle boxes in all schools in our division at the start of next year.
