Saving Water and Saving Waterways
Vision
Cleaning up the school yard and neighbouring park to reduce garbage that can end up in waterways. Save water via incorporating rain barrels into our pollinator garden care.
Action
Students throughout the school are cleaning up the school yard, so that there isn’t garbage that ends up in our waterways. They have also been learning about how to reduce garbage in the landfill by having students in our environment club encourage litterless lunches, make videos, stories, presentations, plays, puppet shows, books about taking care of the earth, reusing items and what the effects are on animals, plants and people if they do not. They had the honour of being recognized by the local MLA, Mike Moyes for their work. As well, they had the opportunity to meet new organizations that we could partner with in the future at the Manitoba Legislature Earth Day event that they were invited to.
Another project is continuing to care for our pollinator garden, for which we purchased rain barrels. These barrels hold 189 liters when full, so this will save a lot of water usage.
We are also having a bike bus on certain school days to encourage active transportation. Several learned how to be bike marshals with Bike Winnipeg to learn how to do this safely. This project doesn`t cost anything but it was important to the environment club. Over 100 will participate.
Also free but important is not only planting trees with Winnipeg Trails, but also learning to love and take care of the ones we have. Students speak to the trees, sing songs about them, water them etc to develop a connection to these beautiful plant relatives.
Reflection & Celebration
The Earth Day Celebration at the Legislature plus the Member`s Statement were so amazing as a celebration of what the environment club does for the school and the community. The bike bus day will be an amazing celebration of fun and reducing our CO2 impact. It will be exciting to see all the presentations for the school community by the club, as a wonderful representation of what they can do to help the environment.
