School Garbage Reduction Project
Vision
We’re two grade eight students from Oakville, Ontario. We were inspired to do this since in the recent years, we’ve been reminded by activists like Greta Thunberg, David Suzuki, Autumn Peltier and many others that every little act will make a difference to change our planet to a better place. We chose this project because we wanted to make our school as ecological as possible. We noticed our school provided plastic utensils to use during break, so we presented a solution to our principal. Another suggestion we had was to order garbage grabbers to clean our field and blacktop. We’ve attended protests at Town Hall, and we’ve started several environmental projects that include reducing paper usage at school.
Action
Purchase the necessary tools (wooden utensils and garbage picker-uppers)
Spread awareness about our project
Involve others to participate
Plan the clean-ups and start replacing plastic utensils
Record the difference in waste consumption and calculate how much garbage was collected
Reflection & Celebration
Due to Covid 19, the clean-ups did not take place as the school went into lockdown on March 13th 2020, just after the materials were delivered to the school.
