School Garden – Feeding a Community

Vision

Our vision is to expand our small school garden to feed the school in the cafeteria and to feed the surrounding communities as a space for families to grow their own food.

Action

We started our garden last year by growing food inside during the winter months and then transplanting in the spring. Once spring came our students constructed the greenhouse, raised beds, and planters for the areas. Students also tilled the land, planted and maintained the garden during the school months. Once school closed for the summer, we hired a student to maintain the garden so we could harvest in the fall. We had a our successful harvest in Oct 2024. We are currently growing inside and once the weather warms we will transplant outside and extend our garden.

Reflection & Celebration

We are very excited as a school community to have our own garden. We have used some food to help families in the area as we have used some to eat while at school. Our garden is not big enough yet to feed the entire school community but we are eager and excited to expand it each season.
