School Garden Project
Vision
After attending a Learning for a Sustainable Future conference in partnership with the Halton District School Board, our grade five and six students were energized and eager to take on an action project. They reflected that while some of the older students had constructed a garden in the school yard last year, it was in need of some fresh plants and protection from rogue soccer balls and small animals. They brainstormed how they could help protect the garden, and what they could plant to help the environment and our community.
Action
The group decided to plant a number of different pollinator perennials as well as a variety of vegetables that could be enjoyed in a salad, or donated to our school breakfast and snack program to help feed students in our school community. The group researched which plants to buy and what the best methods would be for protecting the garden. After procuring the plants, the students got together and planted the vegetables and flowers. We will continue to water and care for our plants and are excited to watch them grow, and share the fruits (or rather vegetables) of our labour with our school community!
