Solar dehydrator
Vision
Our school has a successful rooftop garden in partnership with volunteers from the Cummings Centre, which serves seniors in our community. The volunteers take care of the garden in the summer when the students are away, and during that time, we get lots of vegetables. We figured a solar dehydrator would be an environmentally friendly way to make sure more of the veggies last until the students returned to school in the fall.
Action
We asked the woodworkers at Cummings to build a dehydrator, and they did. So far, we’ve tried to make banana chips in the dehydrator. We look forward to using it much more. We’ve also done most of the planting for the year, and kindergarten students came from our elementary school to plant tomatoes they grew from seeds.
Reflection & Celebration
We’ve eaten a couple of banana chips but they weren’t ready yet. We hope to use the dehydrator much more this summer and fall.
