SPC Food Forest – Year 2
Vision
This year for our action project we decided to develop our garden more. We constructed and planted a Medicine Wheel Garden, planting traditional herbs and native species in the garden. We also got the whole school involved by providing a garden plot for each classroom and encouraging each class to grow produce that we can also use in our school lunch program and our Fire Friday program. We also learned about growing companion plants like the 3 sisters, and other species that co-exist in harmony in ways like natural pest repelling and helping each other grow better.
Action
We surveyed the students to see what kind of produce they would like to grow this year and taught each class about our vermicomposting system that we started last year with the help of LSF and the grant we applied for last year. Classes would come out to the garden each week to tend to and in our Fire Friday classes we would plant, weed, haul dirt, identify plants, and make observations about how the garden was growing.
Like last year, we intend to supplement out school lunch and snack program, share with the community, and earn our treats from the garden by doing work in the garden.
Reflection & Celebration
As this is an ongoing project, we will be adding photos to our Google Photos album as the garden progresses.
One new thing we were able to do this year was host a Family & Culture night in the garden where families were invited to have dinner, help plant and weed the garden, cook traditional foods over the fire, and play both traditional and stick games. There was also a sage bundling station where families could make their own sage bundle for smudging.
