SPJH Gardening Club: Cultivating Knowledge and Community
Vision
The SPJH Gardening Club recently led an inspiring Action Project aimed at increasing gardening literacy within our school community while also supporting a meaningful cause—the Breakfast Club, which serves many of our students.
In addition to educating others, the club took direct environmental action by enhancing biodiversity in the school’s green spaces.
Action
The club discovered that a common reason people didn’t garden was simply because they didn’t know how. In response, the students created “Good to Grow” kits, complete with seeds, materials, and step-by-step instructions to guide beginners in growing their own plants. These kits were sold during lunch periods and promoted via school-wide emails.
To enhance biodiversity in the school’s green spaces, hey transformed a plain strip of grass into a vibrant garden filled with native plants like blackberry, raspberry, and cranberry, among others.
Reflection & Celebration
While sales are still ongoing, the club has already raised over $120 to support the Breakfast Club!
The garden project quickly gained positive attention, with students and staff alike praising the new garden for its beauty and ecological value.
Through these efforts, students not only deepened their knowledge of sustainable gardening and biodiversity, but also made a lasting impact on both the environment and the school community.
