St. Augustine’s Garden for Good

Vision

We wanted to create a garden that our students and community members could watch grow. We wanted to help the students in our school learn more about making sustainable food choices, pollinators and the benefits of plant growth. We wanted this garden to be able to be used by future students in our school.

Action

Our leadership team attended the forum in October. We were not sure what to do first but the students wanted to do something with planting. Our principal mentioned that it might be nice to create a school garden. The students researched how gardens would help the environment. We learned that they help with taking carbon dioxide out of the air. We also learned that gardens are a great idea because they help the world make good, sustainable food choices. Next, students had to look into what types of plants grow well in Newfoundland. We wanted to find things that we could plant in late May or June because we often have late frosts here. We also wanted to pick plants that can be harvested in the fall when everyone returns to school. We chose pumpkins because they are good for pollinators and will grow well into the fall. We also chose broccoli, romaine lettuce, beets, and lots of carrots because they grow well in our climate. We have a Fall Fair at our school and we wanted to be able to harvest the plants to have at the fair so that we can teach the community about what we did. In April and May, we worked with another group in our school to build the planters. Then, when they were ready, the town of Wabana brought in some clay and rocks for us to line the bottom of our planters. Then we filled them up with potting soil and planted our seeds. We will be taking turns looking after the garden over the summer. We will then be able to reuse our soil and planters to continue with our gardens in future years.

Reflection & Celebration

We learned a lot and had a lot of fun! We won’t be able to harvest our vegetables until the Fall but we now have 4 lovely planters at the front of our school for our students and community members to watch grow. When we do harvest, we plant to share our results at our school fall fair so that our community can celebrate with us.
