St. James Collegiate is now a Green Circle Salon

Vision

Knowing that thousands of kilograms of waste from beauty salons in North America end up in the landfill every day, we wanted to minimize our school’s contribution as much as possible. We have a hairstyling program in our school and we wanted to attempt to be as close to zero-waste as possible.

Action

Our school became a member of Green Circle Salons. Through this program, we are able to divert virtually all of our hairstyling program waste from the landfill. We collect all types of waste, such as hair, excess colour, colour canisters, broken hair dryers, curling irons, disposable gloves, foils and almost everything else (aluminum and paper are still managed by the school). Once we fill a large shopping box provided by Green Circle Salons, it is sent to their warehouses and sorted into a variety of repurposing/recycling streams.

Reflection & Celebration

All students in the hairstyling program have been trained and certified by Green Circle Salons. We are proud to be a member of this organization and to prevent a lot of waste from going to the landfill.
