St. Joseph Community Garden

Vision

We strive to grow food in our community garden and pollinator garden to share with members of the school community. We will and have chosen plants that are useful for humans and pollinators. While our Community Garden exclusively focuses on annual harvests, our grade 8 grad perennial garden will have some native plants that provide food for human use as well.

Action

We have two gardens at our school. The Community garden is located at the back of the school by our parking lot. Our grade 8 grad perennial garden is located at the front of the school. We have been planting at both locations for over two years and each year, we have gathered a small harvest that has been shared within our community. Our pollinator garden has been slow to start and I believe that many of the plants are still taking root. In June 2025, we will be adding elderberry, more Milkweed and Brown Eyed Susans to our Garden.

Reflection & Celebration

The first time we planted our grad garden, it was in the fall and unfortunately, it was mowed over by the landscaping company. However, that didn’t stop us from trying again! In the fall, we built a sign and will be adding more signs with each passing grad year. We also added a stone separation to make our garden easy to see.

We look forward to having recent grads coming to water our garden this summer. They can start completing volunteer hours before they begin their studies in grade nine at their new schools. This will be a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the fact that even when our seasons change and new experiences begin, we always leave a mark on our past.

*We realised the spelling of perennial was incorrect, but because we didn’t want to have it mowed over again, we knew we would fix it in the spring.
