Sustainability at School

Vision

Our vision for Canada is…
This project is a response to the large amount of waste created by our high school. Our students wanted to see full blue bins and green bins, and empty garbage cans. We wanted to fully commit our school to become more sustainable by wasting less. With a focus on composting and energy reduction, we aim to make our school 100% more efficient and less wasteful. We will accomplish this by using green bins and energy reduction education. To support this vision, students invested their Our Canada Project grant to purchase green bins, electricity monitors, and scales for waste audits.

Action

We consulted with various community members involved with sustainability and waste reduction, such as employees with the City of Sudbury. They were able to supply us with a good amount of green bins and a large yellow dumpster for the entire school to compost. Then we launched the green bin campaign at school. The student team went to every single classroom to explain the bin and what went in it. Specific students emptied these bins every day. Students then created signage for all switches, projectors, and vents in the school reminding them to turn them off when not in use.
