Sustainability Garden

Vision

Our vision for Canada is… to provide inviting green spaces for people to relax in and enjoy. Such spaces can be used to reflect, relax and improve mental health. Mental Health is a very real issue in society and we wish provide an outlet.

Action

This was a Creative, Active, Service (CAS) project developed by students in the International Baccalaureate Programme at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School. The student goal was to create a sustainable garden at the school. They connected with the chaplain of the school who is interested in developing a space for religious reflection. These ideas combined to create the space that class can have religious retreats in and for individuals to rest and relax. Both aspects can help to improve the mental health of students. Mental health is an issue that is great concern in our busy, modern society. Everything was designed and implemented by the students.

Reflection & Celebration

We will be acquiring a Service Berry tree from Oakville Green to place in the center of the garden to bring the whole of the garden together. The milkweed plants have been planted in the inner circle of the garden.
A garden is not a static object but instead evolves with time. We are excited to continue to maintain, refresh, and upgrade the school’s new garden using the help of the next generation of students with a passion for ecological advocacy.
