Sustainable Food Sharing
Vision
Our vision is that students will learn about sustainable food production practices and the importance of considering local produce and pollinator species in their planting plans. Identifying flower and shrub species which would enhance our vegetable gardens, as well as the ideal plants to grow in proximity to each other, will help to produce healthier plants and a greater yield. The produce from the school gardens will be distributed to local Community Food Share organizations.
Action
Three classes within the school (Environmental Science, Life Skills, and Green Industries) prepared approximately 15 square metres of garden beds for planting. As of May 21, plants and seeds have been purchased and will be planted over the coming weeks. New raised beds have been built outside of the school gates so that student volunteers can maintain the beds and harvest the produce over the summer. The Green Industries class experimented with a homemade greenhouse and are preparing seedlings for later transplant. Students researched the best location and construction of beds, local pollinator species, and local produce that would be best for sharing with Community Food Share to identify items they wished to purchase.
Reflection & Celebration
Although we have just begun to fill the garden beds and plant, we are excited about the learning that has already taken place and the engagement of students as they work in the gardens over the next few months.
