The Ugly Delicious Revolution: Cooking Up Solutions to Food Waste
Vision
Vision for an “Ugly Delicious” Future
The basic vision of our Ugly Delicious project was to transform the way our community views food, especially items often deemed “waste.” We aimed to empower students to show that even “ugly” or past-peak foods are still perfectly edible and can be turned into something delicious. By doing this, we hoped to inspire a shift in behavior, encouraging everyone to reduce food waste at home, save money, and collectively contribute to a healthier planet by lessening harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Action
Developed “Ugly Delicious” Recipes: They created new recipes that creatively used foods that were past their peak freshness or appearance (e.g., overripe bananas, wilted greens, soft vegetables).
Recruited Stakeholder Taste Testers: Students reached out to and gathered feedback from various community members, including nutritionists, dieticians, parents, and other kids, who acted as taste testers for their recipes.
Created Podcast Episodes: They planned, wrote scripts for, and produced a series of podcast episodes.
Designed a Project Logo: Students developed a unique logo for their podcast and project.
Prepared and Cooked Recipes: They actively cooked and prepared the “ugly delicious” recipes they developed.
Interviewed Guests for Podcast: Students conducted interviews with their taste testers and other relevant individuals for inclusion in their podcast episodes.
Distributed Podcast on Spotify: They successfully published and distributed their podcast episodes on the Spotify platform, making them publicly accessible.
Reflection & Celebration
We will be showcasing our podcast to the whole school community and publishing it for general viewing.
