Tomatoes for Tomorrow
Vision
Our vision is to cultivate a thriving community garden where students can engage in the rewarding process of growing tomatoes, harnessing the power of teamwork and agriculture to foster a sustainable future. Through the sale of our fresh, organically grown tomatoes, we aim to raise funds that will directly support our local food bank. This initiative not only provides nutritious food to those in need but also empowers students with agricultural skills and instills a sense of social responsibility. Together, we are planting seeds of change to create a healthier, more connected community.
Action
Students planted tomatoes and other plants to raise money for the local food bank.
The student project of planting tomatoes and other plants to raise money for the local food bank aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action in the following ways:
UN SDGs:
SDG 2 – Zero Hunger: The project contributes to ending hunger and achieving food security by supporting the local food bank, which provides nutritious food to those in need1.
SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: By growing tomatoes organically, the project promotes sustainable agriculture practices and aims to reduce food waste2.
SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: The initiative strengthens the local community by fostering a sense of collective responsibility and supporting local needs1.
TRC Calls to Action:
Education for Reconciliation (Calls 62-65): The project can serve as an educational tool for students to learn about Indigenous knowledge and agricultural practices, promoting intercultural understanding and respect3.
Youth Education (Calls 6-12): The involvement of students in the project helps address educational gaps by providing hands-on learning experiences and fostering a connection to the land, which is an integral part of Indigenous culture4.
By engaging in this project, students are not only contributing to their local community but also participating in a global movement towards sustainability and reconciliation. The project serves as a practical application of these goals and calls to action, demonstrating how local initiatives can have a broader impact on societal and environmental challenges.
Reflection & Celebration
This project has been a huge success! The best part was the smiling faces of the students who participated in the plant sale.
