Tree planting
Vision
Students in grade 5 attending the Youth Climate Action Forum in the spring. They were inspired by speakers and other youth around the city to take climate action. Their vision was to plant trees in our school yard to provide shade, clean air and help pollinators.
Action
Students did research on the best kind of trees to plant that would thrive in our schoolyard’s conditions and soil. We wrote a letter to the City of Winnipeg forester about our plan and got her guidance on where to plant as well as how to best care for the trees. We will be planting a Manitoba maple and a Japanese lilac tree in June.
Reflection & Celebration
Students were so excited and proud to plant these 2 new trees in our schoolyard. They have said that taking this climate action makes them feel as though they can do more projects like this in the future!
