Tree Planting Project

Vision

Our vision was to plant more trees in our developing school community to reduce the impact of climate change in our area. By planting more trees, we will replace some of the trees that have been cut down due to the development and growing population around our school.

Action

We applied for the permits to plant trees on the school property and were promptly told, “No”. So we decided to contact the town and partner with the local arborist to help us convince the school board that we were able to plant trees. When we reconnected with the school board we were quickly told, “No” again. We had to change to types of trees that were recommended by the school board to plant. Once we changed our trees and consulted with the town and school board on the location we were finally granted the permit.

Reflection & Celebration

Although this has been a very long and challenging process with the school board, I am very happy that we persevered through the struggles and the “no’s” and continued with our plan. The students learned more than just about planting trees. They learned to persevere when they are told no, they learned how to work as a team and with different community representatives as well how to accomplish the goals that they set out to do. It was a very happy ending when they finally got to plant “their” trees.
