Vermicomposter
Vision
Our vision is to reduce food waste going to the landfill. We are looking for ways to utilize food waste from our classrooms and a worm composter or vermicomposter is a great way to incorporate a reduction in waste, as well as creating both an educational resource and a nutritious additive to our gardens around the school campus.
Action
The Green Team, the environmental and garden club at Maple Ridge S.S., transformed two rubber maid bins into classroom Vermicomposters. We created the bins by drilling holes in the side and filling the bins with leaf mulch, newspaper clippings and old potting soil. We sourced our worms from a local producer to help out the local economy. Currently we are utilizing food scraps from the food and nutrition classes as well as the staff work room.
Reflection & Celebration
We have seen a great interest in the worm composting project and plan on adding two more worm composters into additional classrooms including science and life skills. Students show great interest in checking in on the worms and feeding them each week. Students have learned a great deal about the nutrient cycle and how our actions can make a difference.
