Vermicomposting
Vision
The students that attended the Youth Forum were fired up about vermicomposting, and they made it happen! Our school’s compost typically gets picked up by a van and taken to an off-site Biovator, but we figured we could divert 2/3 of our organic waste towards on-site vermicomposting boxes and then use the compost ourselves, thus reducing the need for driving and running the Biovator. Plus worms are cool!
Action
A small group of Grade 7/8 students went on a shopping trip for supplies and listened to a self-professed ‘local worm guy’ give a talk on how to care for Red Wriggler Worms. They found a few classes around the school that were willing to house vermicompost bins and showed them how to do it. That same group of students monitors the bins every couple days to ensure the worms have enough food and moisture, and we are excited to use our own homemade compost in our gardens this year!
Reflection & Celebration
This has truly been a student-led project, from the very idea through its continuous maintenance. The students have become experts on vermicomposting and take pride in sharing their knowledge with others. The fact that it’s grade 7 and 8 means that the Grade 7s will be around next year to train up the next generation of vermicomposters, so it should be able to continue indefinitely. Great work, AEW!
