Vermicomposting Farms – A Step Toward a Better Future
Vision
Our vision is to create a better future by having all schools take action to help achieve the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. If we can do it, you can do it!
Action
We have tackled 7/17 of the SDGs by shifting the culture of our school to embrace a cross curricular whole school learning project involving Red Wiggler worms, focusing on improving soil health. Having worm farms in the classrooms enables students to learn about organic decomposition, the soil food web, the relationship between earth worms and ecological sustainability. It provided authentic and hands on experiences which extended into a gardening project.
Children were taught about vermicomposting (which is the process of turning organic waste into healthy soil) and researched how improving soil health is essential to our survival. It’s what gives our planet life. Planet life is the focus of the SDGs.
Students built the worm farms out of wood and wire, created the bedding out of leaves, cardboard and water and then cared for the worms with a feeding and watering schedule along with ensuring egg shells were sprinkled in the farm on a regular basis to help with worm digestions. The worm castings (poop) were then collected and used to create healthy soils for growing tomato plants.
We educated the community and had families ‘adopt’ our farms to help care for them over holidays.
Our goal is to extend our project and share the learning journey with other schools to have them take on a similar project. As the kids say…if we can do it, you can do it!
Reflection & Celebration
We celebrated our learning journey with a Video launch party on May 22nd. Our culminating video was launched and our assembly was attending by our Director of Education, the Dean of Queen’s Faculty of Education, our school Trustee, parents, media and our Kingston Sustainability committee. It was a fantastic day of sharing and learning together.
