Waste-Free Lunches & Meals

Vision

We wish to raise awareness about being environmentally friendly, encourage others to reuse items and decrease waste. We hope that everyone in our school community will have an increased awareness and
encouragement about how to decrease their ecological footprints.

Action

This action relates to the UN sustainability goal of Climate Action, Responsible Consumption and Action, Life Below Water, Life on Land, Partnerships for the Goals, and Clean Water and Sanitation. We will persuade others, vote with our wallets, and lower our footprints. We will be promoting waste-free lunches and meetings. When speaking with the City of Richmond Hill and caretakers, a problem they wish to be addressed is waste. The Guidance Dept. also receives visits from students asking for utensils. Also, by having reusable items, we will decrease our ecological footprint and help decrease climate change consequences. Reusable items will reduce plastic waste and reliance on petroleum products and the associated burning of fossil fuels.

Reflection & Celebration

Posters were put up to raise awareness and promote bringing waste-free lunches. We asked students to submit photos and pledges for winning reusable utensils. Ecoteam members were also given reusable utensils for all the great work they had done. There are 20 plates that will be used for salad parties when we harvest from hydroponic systems, and the re-useable utensils will be used for this as well. In addition, 10 plates from another grant will make a class set.
