Water Bottles and News Articles
Students started out with a vision to create a community pantry, but due to limitations of the pandemic, changed routes and looked for a way that they could help within our school community. Students identified plastic water bottles as a large issue within our school community. They decided to design their own reusable water bottles for the entire grade. These will be used with the water bottle filling stations that we already have at the school. This will reduce the amount of plastic water bottles that end up on the school yard as well as in the garbage each day. In addition to water bottles, students decided on writing news articles for a local news site. They wanted their impact to be seen beyond the walls of our school, and thought a news article would be a great way to get information out to our larger community.
Students planned and designed a custom logo to be printed on water bottles. These bottles were ordered for the entire grade (250 water bottles) that can be used with the existing water bottle refill stations to eliminate plastic bottles. For their news articles, they chose to focus on a variety of sustainability topics based on personal experience and interest, and identified needs in their home community. Some topics included included good health and wellbeing with specific focus on how Covid has impacted racialized groups in Brampton and access to the vaccine, how the pandemic has impacted climate change and what we can do to help, and pollution in the community. Some of these articles will be published in the next few weeks for community access and to raise awareness and links will be added to this site.
Reflection & Celebration
Students reflected on the benefits of helping their own community and enjoyed the critical thought and creativity throughout the process. They will get to celebrate when water bottles are given out to all students in their grade later this month.
