Vision

Change Makers is my student-action club. The goal of this club is to focus on student empowerment. At the start of the year they brainstormed issues of concern to them and the environment was at the very top. They wanted to find practical and sustainable ways to reduce our carbon footprint and/or enhance the school environment by adding plants.

Action

They researched the benefits of planter boxes in classrooms and what plants would grow best. They felt that even though the club was responsible for the creation of the boxes, that everyone in the building would be taking ownership for their maintenance. With the boxes in classrooms, teachers could do mini-lessons and students could be responsible for looking after the boxes.
Additionally, we had a teacher pass away in the fall. They wanted to plant a memorial tree which would be valuable to the moral of school in this teacher’s memory and planting trees is also good for the environment.

Reflection & Celebration

The students collaborated well as a group to make decisions. They were able to discuss pros and cons, conduct effective research to make the best choices possible and communicate their vision for the project to staff and businesses.
