Water Quality monitoring and Western Painted Turtle habitat restoration
Vision
Our vision is to help students understand what it means to learn about important water courses in our community and implement action projects to protect them.
Action
We made multiple visits to local ponds, creeks and water sources and learned about ways to measure the dissolved oxygen, PH, and temperature. We recorded our findings on the Water Rangers website and map https://app.waterrangers.ca/map#. We also worked together with land owners to improve turtle habitat by selecting and installing basking logs for Western Painted Turtles. Students developed an improved understanding of water cycles, water testing and how to protect water to improve habitat for local species, especially those that are blue-listed (of special concern), like these painted turtles. Many students also extended their learning by putting together environmental projects related to the Canoe Creek watershed. They presented these projects at an environmental Expo with other classes at the local mall on Earth Day. These projects included creating inventories of aquatic invertebrates, mammals and birds. Some groups were involved in tree planting and native tree planting, and another group was involved in removing invasive species.
Reflection & Celebration
This project brought attention to the Canoe Creek watershed and gave community members an opportunity to learn about what can be done to protect it.
