Zen Garden
Vision
For the past couple of years , especially after Covid, we saw an increase in anxiety and mental health issues in all grades at our school. My eco team consisting of 15- 6th grade students decided to build a zen garden in our school yard with a bench, bird feeders, and some flowers for pollinators. They felt that this could be a safe space for everyone to simply sit and breathe while taking in the beauty of nature surrounding them, meanwhile providing food for our birds and pollinators. In our KDG classes, we also have a tradition every year of raising caterpillars. This year, we hope to let them out in our garden. We were also fortunate for the second time, this year, in receiving 40 pollinator plants from the Canadian Wildlife Federation which we will be able to plant in our garden.
Action
Our project has not begun as my director took a very long time to place the order. She actually placed it yesterday!! We will begin our garden and planting our plants as soon as we receive our order.
Reflection & Celebration
I believe that once this is done, we will be able to really benefit from this area for many years to come, all the while taking care of our pollinators. Our sixth graders shall be leaving a small legacy in our schoolyard and passing the torch to our little Kinders who in turn will become more aware of the environment and its importance, especially for our pollinators. 🙂
