Vision

We wanted to reduce our waste as a school and help the environment by sending less garbage to landfill.

Action

We want to make our earth a cleaner place, starting with our school. We decided to purchase two Zero Waste Boxes from TerraCycle, because they are a company that focuses on saving the environment. Zero Waste Boxes have many variations, but we decided to buy the candy and snack wrappers boxes, because that is what most students have in their lunch daily. Around our school, we noticed that there were a lot of wrappers littering the school grounds and there were many wrappers being thrown into our garbage cans in the classrooms. Zero Waste Boxes are a great way to turn something that would ordinarily end up in a landfill by harming the environment and taking up space. It’s also a great way to get the school involved in this project easily because most of the people bring plastic wrapped snacks to school. We are always looking for new ways to make our school more Eco-friendly, and the Zero Waste Boxes will help that initiative. We specifically made a slide show to educate the classes about our project. We educated our primary and junior eco team members, and with their help, we distributed reusable bags to classes so they could collect wrappers from their lunches. We weekly collect the schools’ wrappers and put them in the zero waste boxes. When we completely fill the boxes, they will be picked up by TerraCycle and the plastic will be recycled. We are reducing the amount of garbage and helping the environment.

Reflection & Celebration

We involved students from every grade in our school. Members of our ECO teams had leadership opportunities. We are reducing our garbage being collected.
A nearby city has these Zero Waste Boxes in a mall and we are hoping to convince a nearby mall to do the same so we can continue to recycle wrappers without having to purchase the boxes another year.
