Bird Watching

Vision

The kindergarten students showed an interest in learning about birds. After identifying what we thought we knew about birds, questions that we had about birds, and doing some reading we wanted to watch for birds. We set up a bird feeder outside of our classroom and the students started watching to see who would visit. Unfortunately the students could not see the trees clearly from our classroom window, which meant they couldn’t identify them. I thought that with some binoculars and additional books at their reading level, we could continue to build this interest and desire to help the environment.

Action

We purchased binoculars with our grant money and the students were very enthusiastic to use them bird watching! They looked for the size and colour of the birds to identify them with pictures from our books. We made bird feeders with our Grade 7/8 class for the students to take home to share their new learning and environmental interest with their families.
