Fish Don’t Smoke!
Vision
Gr.7 Science students observed that cigarettes were being discarded on the ground in their seaside town. and noted a lack of receptacles. Students then researched the consequences of cigarette butts in waterways, finding that cigarette filters are made of plastic and therefore don’t decompose. Additionally, the chemicals in cigarettes leach into waterways. They wanted to do something about it.
Action
Students researched possible receptacles and locations for receptacles around their town. Next, they presented their proposal to purchase receptacles to the town council. The town embraced the idea and asked the BIA to match the funds students had received from their LSF grant. Other costs were covered by the town. As a result, seven receptacles will be placed around the community in Spring of 2023!
Reflection & Celebration
Students look forward to seeing these receptacles around their town, and are hopeful they will see less cigarette butts discarded on the ground. They have successfully identified a need in their community and have been an integral part of improving the situation. They have worked with their municipal government to make a change.
