Vision

Food waste is a major contributor to climate change. At our school we have an underlying theme of food related issues. Our students are learning that food waste uses billions of dollars and is a major factor in increasing our greenhouse gases if you consider how much is used to plant, harvest, transport food that never reaches our plates or get eaten. Students raise a bucket of red wiggler worms and feed them food waste, and make connections to learning objectives in their science class understanding the consequence of food waste yet realizing composting is a realistic waste reduction method we can do at school and home.

Action

Students have built vermicompost buckets, fed and watered their worms, do basic health checks every few days (make sure worms remain alive). It is a sustainable project because students will be able to grow a population of worms and use them in other classes in the school.
Students will make curricular connections, and are doing a poster project showing their learning and those connections.
Some students will present their findings and worms in a kiosk style environment in a common area in the school, encouraging the general student population to reduce their waste, and look to composting as a feasible way to deal with food waste.
